Hi Everyone,
When I was in Philadelphia last week I was delighted to discover that the local Michaels had a display with several of my books on it.
Even more exciting is that Michaels is going to include some of my new Zenspirations(R) Color, Create, Pattern & Play books on an end-cap later this year. I’ve been working on four new titles: Birds & Butterflies, Expressions of Faith, Trees & Leaves, and Heartfelt Expressions, two or three of which will be on the endcap.
This is the cover concept for the Birds & Butterflies book:
The Birds & Butterflies cover concept has been approved, and I’m almost done with the drawings. The Trees & Leaves cover has also been approved, although I haven’t started on the interior drawings yet.
But the book I’m really excited to draw is Expressions of Faith, which will be a combination of scripture and my own sentiments. My first concept for this cover was a cross design.
Unfortunately the cross design didn’t get approved. I suspect the buyer wants a cover design which would appeal to people of all faiths. The two concepts currently under consideration are an angel and a dove flying in front of a rainbow. Before creating another cover design I would REALLY appreciate your thoughts on which direction to pursue. Here is the angel my publisher likes:

I like the dove on the left the best because of the rainbow in the background. It expresses faith more than the angel because it is the promise God gave to Noah and the world following the flood. Noah had faith and trusted God.

1) Yes I do both love coloring and adding to your pictures in the books I already have.
2) I would rather see an angel, I collect Angels so I'm a little biased.
3) I'd like maybe a little text along the bottom but not on the middle of her. I think it detracts from the beauty of the angel itself. I hope you put some of your Judaica works in it.
4) Heartfelt Expressions for sure.
5). I like the center dove but for the inside of the book.
Are you ever planning to do a workshop in the metro DC area? Maybe at the Scrapbook Expo in June (hint, hint)
Dear Me! Hard to make choices when I love everything you design! I have really enjoyed the freedom of sitting and just drawing lines–I can do that!! And adding other shapes is exciting to discover how it all comes together. A very freeing experience–especially a world that others most of the time want a dog to look like a dog–mine don't!! The dove in the middle seems to be looking toward the Father and is my favorite. If you are unable to use Scripture, let's just not have words. I am so thankful that Scripture is part of your work. Heartfelt Expressions is the book I would love to see after the ones you are already working on. Yes I enjoy coloring but would like to do better with colored pencils that can be blended. Given the publisher wants to make sure all faiths are represented, why not go with a quote on faith instead of a scripture verse? Something like, "Faith is the bird that sings when the dawn is still dark." This would go great with the dove.

I was VERY excited to see more of your books in Michael's!! I have LOVED my Letters & Patterning book. I go back to it over and over again! We ultimately ordered through Amazon because I couldn't find it anywhere else.

5. My favorite is the dove on the left – it is heading directly toward the start of the beautiful rainbow (perhaps that is the sun?). The center one gives the impression that the dove is only slightly interested (like a casual glance); on the right the dove looks like it is just crossing over the top of the rainbow without any interest in all that lovely color.

1. YES to coloring!! I find it soothing just as it was when I was a kid. My daughter likes to color too and she's over 40!!

I think the dove on the left is best. The others distract from the beautiful rainbow design. They are too big and too white. The dove on the left may be too white also — suppose it was very lightly tinted, shaded a bit to reflect the rainbow colors?

Hi Joanne, I really love the angel one. I don't colour in the books but I bought 'Inspirations' last week to get ideas for enhancing the backgrounds of my mixed media paintings. This book really got me started with adding lines and doodles to compliment the main subject which is usually a fairy, angel or mermaid! I also love ideas for inspiring quotes. I'm looking forward to your new book with scripture. I also enjoy your videos on lettering which is new to me and something I want to get better at. I first discovered you through youtube after searching 'lettering' and I searched for your books but after calculating the shipping and exchange (I'm from Canada) I thought twice. A few days later I was in my local Michaels and almost bumped into a rack of your books! I was so excited to be able to purchase it right away and not have to wait for it in the mail. I really am enjoying it and hope you know how much you inspire us! Thank you!
1. Do you enjoy coloring? – Absolutely !! I find it therapeutic almost to sit down and color in a coloring book even if it's one meant for children. Grabbing my coloring pencils and coloring in a coloring book after a stressful day or even just a day you just wanna quietly dwell into something.
2. Would you rather see the angel or the dove on the cover of Expressions of Faith? – I think the Angel. It beautifully depicts the expressions of Faith. It was also beautifully drawn !!

3. I would use a generic quote regarding faith. I personally love scriptural quotes, but they may not resonate for people not familiar with the Bible. Although, I assume the significance of the water on the dove cover is from the Noah story.

1. Coloring is fun, soothing and meditative!
2. They're both pretty but I like the dove better. It is still a spiritual and biblical image.
3. I like the text on the angel, but thunk it might be overkill with the doves.

5. The dove flying left across the page. The sun/rainbow draws your eye down to the left and the dove flying to the left draws your eye up and across the opposite direction. Provides good visual interest, ensures your eye is drawn across the whole drawing and I think the perceived movement of the dove balances out the saturated flow of the rainbow.

I have missed your previous blog questions, sadly, because especially the journal one, I had enjoyed because I have been journal-ling with words & art since the late 80's & have kept them all to look back on,
But that was a different post, so here's my answers to this one…

YES

I love both the Angel & the Dove, but I see the Angel with the words in it being a great cover & getting people to want to buy it.
3. Would you like there to be text on the cover of the Expressions of Faith book, and if so, what text?
I think the text you have on it now is perfect for that picture, & for the cover.
4. What book do you think I should work on after I finish the Birds & Butterflies and the Expressions of Faith– the Leaves & Trees book or the Heartfelt Expressions book?
Both the :Leaves & Trees & the Heartfelt Expressions books are going to be big sellers, so I would say for you to do which ever one you feel more "into" working on when you get to it. (I am looking forward to ALL of them!)
5. If we go with the dove/rainbow design, which dove do you like best (left, center, right)?
My "logos" for Peace Hoops is a variety of doves very similar to the center one, & I LOVE IT!
That is the one I would choose if you decide to go with the dove cover, but I am looking forward to it being in the book to color!

I love coloring and have several of your other coloring books – I color almost every day!
I prefer the Angel, but if the Dove wins, I prefer the one on the left heading directly into the rainbow.
If there is text, I think something about Peace after the rain or the promise of the rainbow…
I would love to color Trees and Leaves – I enjoy the peacefulness they represent.
1. I've enjoyed coloring from when I was a little girl. When my boys were younger – I remember laying on the floor on our bellies teaching them to color – to having our favorite "coloring contests" where they would always both 'tie' to win a prize of 1 hour staying up later or a special ride with mom or dad, etc to today – from being exhausted and in pain at the end of a long day – al knowing that I have maybe two hours of sleep time before my son (who rarely sleeps) awakens from medicated sleep …. still not able to fall asleep because my adrenaline from taking care of him all day is so elevated – I color to relax – to fulfill l something inside of me that still makes me aware of who I am from being a caregiver. I love coloring!!!! (I guess I could have just said that… sorry for the long run-on)…
2. Would you rather see the angel or the dove on the cover of Expressions of Faith? I would rather the angel – because I happen to love angels…. however I am thinking that the dove and the background somehow reminds me of ALL FAITHS!!! In all honesty – you can't go wrong with either – no matter what the cover – I will purchase it!
3. Would you like there to be text on the cover of the Expressions of Faith book, and if so, what text? I would like to see text on the cover – I think it gives an added satisfaction to what a buyer is purchasing. I guess I can't say my favorite verse – because there are so many different faiths and different versions of what I consider to be my Bible…. so perhaps some sort of saying incorporating ALL FAITH – an idea of inclusion…. e.g. No matter what religion we are – God loves all of us – or It doesn't matter what religion, He loves us all – or He loves us no matter what faith we are – or We all share one Faith – We are loved! – or Faith is but one religion – I can't come up with the perfect sentiment but I hope I communicated what I am thinking with this horrid run-on sentence.
4. What book do you think I should work on after I finish the Birds & Butterflies and the Expressions of Faith– the Leaves & Trees book or the Heartfelt Expressions book? I would have aid the Heartfelt Expressions book before seeing a sample of your Leaves and Trees – but now that I have seen a "taste" of what you perceive to be Leaves and Trees – I would like that one next – and as an afterthought – no matter which comes first – I will purchase both!!!! I am an avid follower or your products!!!
5. If we go with the dove/rainbow design, which dove do you like best (left, center, right)? In order of preference – the dove on the left – then on the center – then on the right – however – you can't go wrong with any of the three (they are all created with love by you)….

Joanne – I was taking our baby for a walk on our land yesterday and saw some tall stalks of dried grass (it is Autumn in New Zealand) and I wanted to draw "cuffs" on them and pattern in between. I think I have been bitten by the FinkBug! I keep seeing spaces everywhere that could be patterned. Thank you for your youtube clips. Your work is getting me through a very hard patch in life. Yes, I do enjoy coloring although I don't seem to do it very often. Don't know why, really.
My preference is the dove.
In terms of text on the cover, I tend toward simpler. I like "Expressions of Faith" for text.
I'd be interested in seeing Heartfelt Expressions.
I love the center dove – I love the gracefulness of the center one and her tiny eyes. It's beautiful.

I would prefer the dove, but I think most people associate angels with faith and that might make someone pick up your book and buy it. I've been thinking about your designs for a couple of hours and I finally figured out the reason the dove appeals to me. It is a picture of the promises of God. If the dove isn't chosen, maybe you could do another book called Promises and focus on promises found in the Bible and use the dove as a cover for that book!

Hello!… yes I love to color especially with colored pencils.
I like the dove flying to the right. If you have text at the top of the cover it lends itself toward that direction of the lettering and will have a nice visual flow to it. Also the dove is more universal than the angel as I think some religions do not connect with an angel symbol. BUT the angel is so beautiful too! Some text would be nice but subtle…maybe in the waves.I would love to see the trees and leaves book.

I love the dove on the right,it makes your eye flow across the cover better. Yes I love to color. Add a few words, maybe just PEACE. Trees and leaves next! I love your drawings and would love to have the new book added to my collection.
1. I LOVE to color, use markers mostly but sometimes plain ol' crayons or pencil colors. 2 and 3. I like the Angel cover and the text on it is perfect. It seems to fit more with "faith", while a dove symbolizes, to me, peace. Both are appropriate, really, but I would go with the angel. 4. I think you should do Heartfelt Expressions next. 5. And the dove in the center is just right. To me that one shows/means you could be with it, the others are turned away from you.

I think I have all of your books. I so love your heart and your work. I love the cross. I say stick to your faith and don't let anyone dictate to you. I love angels and the dove is BEAUTIFUL. I am going to make a quilt after I get a little better at drawing images. Please keep up the great work.

I LOVE coloring and just bought the 152 crayon carousel! I love the dove, but am sorry you cannot use the cross, which I really loved! If you add any text, you could use "faith, hope, love", but it looks great without too…I just like your writing style too. I would enjoy Hearfelt Expressions so much! And I like both doves for different reasons…the one on the right gives great movement to the overall picture, and the dove in the center is just very pretty…no wrong way there!

1. I do love to color, but I also love to tangle. I would be more likely to buy a coloring book that had larger designs that I could color AND tangle inside – yours do that!

3. Leave the text blank on the cover and perhaps over a few suggestions for text to use their inside the book.
